Senior pictures are kind of a big deal. You only get one senior year and these photos are going to live on your parents' walls, in your announcements, and on grandma's refrigerator for the next decade. No pressure, right? Ha! The good news is that figuring out what to wear does not have to be stressful at all. After 10+ years of photographing seniors all across North Texas, I have learned exactly what works and what does not at every location. So instead of giving you a generic list of tips you could find anywhere, I am going to give you the real specific advice.

Whether you are shooting at Frisco Commons, Prosper Lake, Adriatica, or anywhere else in the North Texas area, this guide is for you!

How Many Outfits to Bring for Your Senior Session in Frisco TX

This depends on which session you booked but here is what I tell all my seniors upfront about outfit changes: your car is your dressing room! There is no studio changing room at an outdoor location, so plan accordingly.

The most important tip I can give you: wear your most difficult outfit to put on FIRST.

That means the dress with the complicated zipper, the outfit that requires the most styling or layering, or the look that takes the longest to get into goes on before you leave the house. The outfits you change into at the car should be the easy ones. Think slip-on dress, simple top swap, or just throwing on a jacket over what you are already wearing.

For Micro Mini (10 Minute Sessions) sessions specifically:

We are typically sticking to one area or background and moving around nearby rather than trekking across a large location. 10 minutes is fast! There are no outfit changes in 10 minutes. What works really well for shorter sessions is one great main outfit with a swap element:

• Throw your letter jacket on over your outfit for a completely different vibe

• Add or remove a cardigan or denim jacket

• Bring a banner / sign

• Cap and gown and we can take it off to take a few photos of the outfit you will be wearing under your cap and gown.

What to Wear for Outdoor Senior Photos in Frisco TX or Mckinney TX Area

Outdoor locations in North Texas are absolutely gorgeous but here is something most photographers won't tell you: the background color matters just as much as your outfit color. At locations like Frisco Commons and Prosper Lake you are working with lots of green grass, green trees, and lush natural scenery. That means some colors will blend right in and disappear while others will pop beautifully.

Green grass and trees are gorgeous but they change everything about what colors work.

Skip these:

• Solid green — you will disappear into the background

• Solid navy — looks flat and muddy against green backdrops. Washes everyone out.
  

Go with these:

• Rust, terracotta, burnt orange, warm brown

• Cream, ivory, dusty blush, mauve

• Burgundy or wine tones especially in fall

• If you know YOUR colors, def make sure what you pick looks great on you!
  

For styles, flowy dresses are my absolute favorite at outdoor locations. Movement photographs beautifully! Cowboy boots with a flowy dress is very Texas and always stunning. Letter jackets are also iconic — start without it and throw it on halfway through for a totally different look.

What to Wear for Senior Photos at Adriatica in McKinney TX

Adriatica is one of my absolute favorite senior photo locations in North Texas and it requires a completely different outfit strategy than a natural outdoor location. The architecture at Adriatica features beautiful cream, tan, and warm stone toned backgrounds. This means you want to create contrast rather than blend in!

I've honestly seen ALL colors used here and it just all looks awesome. Go with what looks great on you and I'll do the rest!

• Bold jewel tones — emerald, burgundy, sapphire

• Black — works beautifully against the light stone

• Terracotta and rust — complement the Mediterranean feel perfectly
  

Flowy maxi dresses, chic blazers, and dressy sandals all look incredible at Adriatica. It is the one location where heels are absolutely worth it!

Quick Style Rules for Any Location

No matter where you shoot, these rules apply:

• Skip bright white: it blows out in sunlight. Cream or off-white is always better

• Skip tiny prints: micro stripes and small patterns cause a weird effect on camera. Solid or bold prints only!

• Skip neons: they cast odd color on your skin and distract from your face

• Add texture: flowy fabrics, chunky knits, denim, lace, and layers all photograph beautifully

• When in doubt, earth tones: rust, warm brown, olive, cream, and dusty blush work everywhere in North Texas

Senior Picture Outfit Tips for Guys in Frisco TX

Keep it simple and keep it you. Dark wash jeans with a solid button down is a classic for a reason. Layer with a flannel or jacket, throw on your letter jacket as a swap, and for the love of everything wear clean shoes. Your feet will be in these photos!

Also: get a fresh haircut 1-2 weeks before your session so it has time to settle but still looks sharp.

Accessories for Senior Pictures

Accessories can take your outfit to the next level but your face is always the star. Keep accessories intentional and not distracting. Here is what works well:

• Hats: baseball caps, cowboy hats, and beanies all work great depending on your vibe and location

• Jewelry: layered necklaces, hoop earrings, and stacked rings all photograph beautifully

• Sunglasses: great for a fun editorial shot but we will take them off for most portraits so we can see those eyes!

• Props: your instrument, sport equipment, or anything that represents who you are adds so much personality

• Sentimental pieces: wearing your grandma's necklace or your dad's old watch makes your photos so much more meaningful. I love when seniors do this!
  

Hair and Makeup Tips for Senior Pictures in Frisco TX

The number one rule: look like yourself just a little more polished! Here are my tips:

• Go slightly heavier on makeup than normal: cameras wash features out a little. What looks like a lot in the mirror will look natural on camera

• Bring touch up products: especially in Texas summers! Blotting papers, lipstick, and hairspray are your best friends

• Avoid anything too trendy that you might regret in 5 years. Timeless beats trendy every time in senior photos

Day of Session Tips for Senior Portraits in Frisco TX

You have your outfits ready and your hair is done. Here are my last minute tips to make sure everything goes smoothly:

• Wear your hardest outfit to put on FIRST: your car is your changing room at outdoor sessions! The outfit you change into at the car should be the easy one

• Steam or iron your outfits the night before: I can and will edit out minor wrinkles.

• Pack outfits on hangers: lay them flat in the back seat or trunk so they stay wrinkle free

• Arrive a few minutes early: rushing in stressed does not set the tone for a relaxed session. The sun goes down no matter if we are done or not!

• Eat something beforehand: nobody looks their best when they are hungry!
